Who can do Taekwon-do? You can! Your kids--age 5 and up--can. Just be ready to learn and commit to working hard for as long as it takes. Taekwon-do can be a rewarding activity for all of your life. You don't need to be in great shape to start. You will get into good shape as you progress through the ranks and the training becomes more demanding. If you already are in good shape, your physical condition will get even better. But even if you haven't done any serious exercise in years, you'll be able to do Taekwon-do. You just progress at your own pace. You don't have to be super coordinated to start Taekwon-do. Again, you will get more coordinated just by training on a regular basis. Many of our black belts, who you will see doing very complicated maneuvers, will admit they were total klutzes when they started Taekwon-do. You don't have to be flexible, either. Flexibility comes from doing the basic moves and from the dynamic stretching we do during and after class. Over time, your flexibility will increase, and that will lead to a lot of other physical benefits. You absolutely do not need any previous martial arts experience. We start you out with very basic moves that form the foundation of Taekwon-do, and then move on when you are ready to learn new skills. If you have done other martial arts before, that may give you an edge, or you may have to work to empty your mind of what you previously learned so that you can accept what we are teaching. We start every student off with a one-on-one class to
introduce the basic moves and the rationale behind them. From there,
new students go to Beginners classes--there are five Beginners classes
a week and you can attend all of them if you want. Typically, after a few
weeks, students have repeated the basic moves enough that they can merge
into the other group classes without feeling frustrated or self-conscious.
