"I started taking Taekwon-do as a way
to reward myself with something that I’ve always wanted to do (from a very
young age) but never felt like I had the time or money to spend.
I was surprised to find out how affordable the monthly tuition is, and
I was surprised at the flexibility in attendance. I always imagined
that there was a rigid class schedule and that as a student I would have
to make it to every class or fall behind. I didn’t expect the independence
I have in being able to come to classes when it suited me and my schedule.
"Taekwon-do is a way for me to help keep
the weight off as I get older, and it is a way that I find is much more
engaging than going to the gym or running. I find that it’s easier
for me to come to class regularly because the challenges are always different
and every class is unique. Also, at the end of each benchmark in
Taekwon-do, I have a new valuable skills and abilities, which I don’t get
with spending weeks on the elliptical trainer or running.
"My favorite parts of class are forms
(especially when I’m learning a brand new one) and kicking (especially
when they’re jumping kicks).
Initially I found sparring intimidating,
but I’m coming around to that part of the class. I’m also taking
a liking to board breaking, and I’m looking forward to being able to break
2 boards.
"The most rewarding to me is the sense
of accomplishment that I receive from progressing in mastery of a complex
and multi-faceted art."
