HO SHIN SUL GUIDE

NOTES ATTACK DEFENSE
1 Step Fighting

White belt level

All stances are front stances. To signal attack is beginning, attacker always steps back with right foot and does a low block with left hand. All stances are front stances unless otherwise noted. All blocks are done with the left arm and all counter attacks are done with the right hand.
1 step #1 Attacker steps forward and then executes middle punch. As attacker steps forward, defender steps back with right foot and blocks punch with a left arm outward middle block. Then defender steps forward and does a middle punch.
1 step #2 Attacker steps forward and then executes middle punch. As attacker steps forward, defender steps back with right foot and blocks punch with a left arm outward middle block. Then defender steps forward and does an inward knifehand strike to the neck.
1 step # 3 Attacker steps forward and then executes a high punch. As attacker steps forward, defender steps back with right foot and blocks punch with a left arm rising block. Then defender steps forward and does an inward knifehand strike to the temple.
1 step #4 Attacker steps forward and then executes middle punch. As attacker steps forward, defender steps to a horse stance with the left foot, angling 45 degrees forward, and does an inward middle block with the left hand. Then in the same stance, the defender does a middle vertical punch to the ribs.
1 Step Fighting

2nd degree yellow belt level.

All stances are front stances. To signal attack is beginning, attacker always steps back with right foot and does a low block with left hand. All stances are front stances. After all blocks, the defender's left hand grabs the attacker's right wrist.
1 step #5 Attacker steps forward and then executes middle punch. As attacker steps forward, defender steps back with right foot and blocks punch with a left arm outward knifehand block. Then the defender steps forward and does a right forearm strike to the nose, chambering the left hand while still gripping the attacker's wrist.
1 step #6 Attacker steps forward and then executes middle punch. As attacker steps forward, defender steps back with right foot and blocks punch with an outward knifehand block. Then the defender steps forward and does an elbow point strike to the sternum, chambering the left hand while still gripping the attacker's wrist. The defender continues to execute an outward backfist with the right hand to the temple, chambering once more with the attacker's still grasped.
1 step #7 Attacker steps forward and then executes middle punch. As attacker steps forward, defender also steps forward and simultaneously punches and blocks the attacker's punch with an outward knifehand block. The defender then does an outward knifehand strike to the attacker's neck, while pulling the attacker's right hand to the chamber.
1 step #8 Attacker steps forward and then executes middle punch. As attacker steps forward, defender steps back with right foot and blocks punch with an outward knifehand block. Then the defender grabs the attacker's right wrist and pushes the right arm up and back, while placing the right foot behind the attacker's right heel and putting the right hand on the attacker's left shoulder. The defender must keep his/her left arm locked straight while twisting to the left and taking the attacker to the floor. Once on the floor, the defender bends his/her left knee and does a right hand punch to the attacker's ribs, while keeping the attacker's left hand in the grasp and chambering.
Breakaways

1st degree yellow belt level

Attacker should repeat attack using the opposite hand for #1 and 2. Defender should repeat breakway #3 using opposite hand.
Breakway #1 Attacker's right hand grabs defender's left wrist. Defender steps forward with left foot into front stance and then executes palm heel strike to attacker's right wrist while chambering hard, then follows with left palm heel strike to face (aim over shoulder).
Breakway #2 Attacker's right hand grabs defender's right wrist. Defender steps forward with right foot into backstance and does a small arm circle with right hand, driving knuckles downward into attacker's wrist, and follows with a backfist to the temple with the same hand.
Breakway #3 Attacker grabs both of defenders hands. Defender stops forward with right foot into front stance and swings right arm up and across body, freeing it from the attacker's grasp. Defender then follows with right hand backfist to attacker's temple while chambering hard to free left hand, and then follows with left hand palm heel strike to attacker's nose.
Breakway #4 Attacker grabs defender by the shoulders (can also work with choke or lapel grab). Defender steps to front stance with right foot while placing hands together, one hand wrapped around the other fist. Defender then shoots arms upward using a wedging action to break the grasp and follows with a double knifehand strike to the neck or clavicle.
2 Step Fighting

With 2-step fighting, there is no step back and low block. Attacker just steps forward and attacks.

2-step fighting #1

2nd degree blue belt level

Attacker steps forward with right foot to front stance and does middle punch, followed quickly by a reverse snap front kick with left foot. Defender steps back with right foot to front stance as attacker steps forward and does a knifehand outer forearm block to stop the punch, then a low crossing block to stop the kick and follows with a left handed punch to the nose. All done in the one front stance.
2-step fighting #2

2nd degree blue belt level

Attacker steps forward with right foot to front stance and does high punch, followed quickly by a reverse thrusting front kick with left foot. Defender steps back with right into a backstance and does a high crossing block to stop the punch, then slides left foot back to a cat stance and does a left low block to stop the kick, following with a reverse (right foot) snap front kick to attacker's tailbone.
2-step fighting #3

1st degree blue belt level

Attacker steps forward with right foot to front stance and does middle punch, followed quickly by a reverse side kick with left foot. Defender steps back with right into a backstance and does an upward palm heel block with left hand, then does a reverse right foot inward crescent kick to stop the attacker's kick, followed immediately by a right side kick.
2-step fighting #4

1st degree blue belt level

Attacker does a right foot snap front kick and quickly follows with a right hand high punch. Defender steps back with right into a backstance and does a low block with left hand, followed immediately by a reverse sidekick to attacker's arm pit.
Controls As with breakaways, the controls should be practiced with one hand and then the other.

The defender's goal is not only to escape from the attacker's grasp, but also to control the attacker with a hold and/or throw. Students cannot rely on the descriptions here for all the details of these moves, but must have them demonstrated. NOTE: Alternative controls may be allowed subject to your instructor's approval.
Control #1

2nd degree purple belt level

Attacker's right hand grabs defender's left wrist. Defender steps back with right foot to front stance while grabbing the back of the attacker's right and with his/her right hand, then lines up thumbs of both hands on the attacker's index and middle knuckles, then presses inward and down to force the attacker into a controlled position.
Control #2

2nd degree purple belt level

Attacker's right hand grabs defender's right wrist. Defender steps backward with right foot to a horse stance while sweeping right hand to the outside of the attacker's wrist, and then applies an arm bar with the left wrist bone pressing on the pressure point just above the elbow. Alternately, the defender may also quickly step forward and around the attacker using the same wrist move, and put the attacker into an arm lock.
Control #3

2nd degree purple belt level

Attacker grabs both of the defender's wrists. Defender executes an outside wrist escape on attacker's left hand then places that hand on the back of the attacker's right hand and follows with a centerline lock while stepping back with right foot to front stance.
Control #4

2nd degree purple belt level

Attacker grabs defender's shoulders. Defender swings right arm across top of attacker's left arm and places right hand on attacker's right hand (thumb between attacker's thumb and index finger and other fingers prying underneath the hand). At the same time, the defender's left palm comes up under the attacker's right elbow. The defender simultaneously lifts up that palm while pressing down with right forearm and twisting 90 degrees to the right, sliding the left arm over the attacker's right elbow for an arm bar.
Control #5

1st degree purple belt level

Attacker does bear hug from behind, pinning defender's arms. Defender stomps on attacker's right foot and then steps into a horse stance with right foot, angling back so that the foot is slightly behind the attacker's right foot. Defender then puts hands together and shoves arms straight outward while simultaneously shoving butt backwards to loosen attacker's grip. Defender follows with right elbow strike to attacker's ribs, then curls right arm around attacker's arm at the shoulder while grabbing the left wrist and twisting upwards. Defender then twists to the left, tripping the attacker over defender's right foot for a takedown. Once the attacker is on the floor, defender executes an arm lock to turn the attacker onto stomach.
Control #6

1st degree purple belt level

Attacker gets defender in a head lock. Defender stomps on most available foot then turns perpendicular to attacker and does a double hooking punch at groin/tail bone level. This is followed by reaching the arm to the attacker's back up past the shoulder and under the jaw and lifting while standing up, which should result in a throw to the ground.
Control #7

1st degree purple belt level

Attacker grabs both of defender's hands from behind. Defender pulls his/her right hand over to left wrist and grabs it,then whirls to left, breaking grip on right hand. This is followed by defender placing right wrist bone on attacker's left arm and executing an arm bar.
