Taekwon-do: fitness
for both body &
brain
On a busy schedule, it's often difficult
to find time to do anything for yourself on a regular basis. Taekwon-do,
however, offers a very efficient means of prolonging your physical and
mental health, and you can do it your entire life. (At Traditional
Taekwon-do, we have had a student in his 70s, several in their 50s.)
A typical hour-long taekwon-do class gives
you a vigorous aerobic workout. Since strikes with both hands and feet
are practiced, virtually every muscle group in the body is employed. Workouts
are safe; as taekwon-do is a relatively modern martial art, the positioning
for executing kicks is physiologically sound. You need not fear stressing
joints or muscles.
Mental conditioning is equally important
in taekwon-do. Students must memorize--and then master--patterns of movement,
each one more complex than the last. Your senses become more acute and
you train to become aware of your surroundings. You not only develop quick
reflexes, but also learn to control your responses to stimuli, so that
each reaction is the appropriate one.
Three to five taekwon-do workouts a week
are enough to keep the body fit and the mind sharp. That's as little as
three hours a week, although once you get into taekwon-do, you will want
to do more. And you will be able to.
Still think you don't have enough time?
Taekwon-do will help you make time. The mental conditioning you get inside
class carries over into your work and everyday life and you mind becomes
quicker. Because of the strenuous workout, you will get to sleep easier
and sleep deeper--which means you may be able to get by on fewer hours
of sleep. So in helping you live longer, taekwon-do will also help you
enjoy getting there.

Get your New
Year’s resolution off to a good start for just $99
Here’s a resolution we promise you will
keep. Sign up for taekwon-do classes in January and you will get
two months of lessons plus a uniform for $99. That’s a savings of
$60 over our regular tuition and fees, and you are still able to
come to as many classes as you want.
Here are some of the things taekwon-do
training can help you with:
Weight management – You don’t have
to be in super shape to start taekwon-do. Our classes are aerobic,
but each student works out at their own pace. After a few weeks,
you should notice a difference in how your feel. You will either
be losing some unwanted pounds or shifting them from fat to muscle.
General cardiovascular fitness --
Our aerobic workouts employ virtually every muscle group. We explain
what you are doing and why, but we also keep you moving.
Quit smoking -- This may take
longer than a few months, but the self-discipline you achieve through taekwon-do,
along with the daily exercise, can give you what it takes to stop smoking.
Grace, agility and flexibility --
You learn how to move efficiently in taekwon-do and our training program
emphasizes flexibility.
Time and stress management --
When you immerse yourself in a martial art such as taekwon-do, you begin
to apply its techniques and strategies to daily life. This leads
to greater effectiveness at work or school and a means of putting things
into their proper perspective.
When you sign up, you go through a series
of beginner’s orientation classes—as many as you need in order to be able
to work out in our regular classes. We keep these classes small,
so there is always plenty of attention paid to each student.
In our regular adult and children’s classes,
we strive to make sure all new students feel welcome and belong in our
school. And as long as you approach our training with good humor
and yet serious intent, you will belong.
