Taekwon-do for Adults

Many adults feel Taekwon-do is a great activity for their children. They appreciate the self-discipline and self-esteem it instills, as well as it being a safe and productive way to burn off extra energy.

Why not Taekwon-do for adults, too? Couldn't we all use more self-discipline? Wouldn't the ability to focus intently under pressure be valuable? Could you use a little more energy?

There are many reasons why adults practice Taekwon-do, among them:

 Fitness

New research at Harvard University confirms that the key to a long, healthy life is regular, vigorous exercise. Further, case studies of Catholic nuns at a school in Mankato, Minnesota--who routinely continue teaching into their eighties--show that challenging mental activity keeps the mind young, as well.

Taekwon-do's exercises combine both physical and mental challenges. Though beginners start at a fairly slow pace, it is possible to progress to a point where you burn several hundred calories in an hour's workout. In addition to aerobic conditioning, Taekwon-do enhances flexibility, strength and coordination.

As you progress, you also learn increasingly complex techniques and combinations of movements, which not only are mentally stimulating, but keep Taekwon-do interesting.

One need not be athletically skilled to study Taekwon-do. Even people with serious physical limitations can become proficient at Taekwon-do. Age is no barrier, either.  Traditional Taekwon-do in Portland has several students in their 50s, many more in their 40s.  We once had a student who started when he was 72 and trained with us until he was 81.

Focusing

For many students, the mental discipline acquired through Taekwon-do is its main reward. They report being better able to handle stress and control their temper, even in difficult job situations.

Precision is fundamental in Taekwon-do. As students progress, they must be able to execute basic techniques more quickly and with sharper accuracy. It is essential to be able to relax and focus at the same time.

This ability can be carried over into many life situations. Because Taekwon-do is hard, daily work becomes easier.

Self-Defense

Within a few days after starting Taekwon-do, students learn simple but effective self-defense techniques. As students progress, they acquire a vast array of skills that can be employed to ward off attackers.

Traditional Taekwon-do is a martial art, with the emphasis on art. Yet every move one practices has a self-defense application.

Perhaps the best thing Taekwon-do teaches about self-defense is simply to avoid conflict whenever possible. With the self-confidence gained from Taekwon-do, one's poise and judgment are enhanced. Students are less likely to be attacked and more likely to walk away from potentially dangerous confrontations.

There are many other reasons for adults to study Taekwon-do, including the joy of friendly competition and the desire to do something of value with your children.
